We love to go there and people watch, as the place is full of funky SF locals. I love sushi and this place was so far below average, it's not even worth a shot. How do you serve that? And, the sushi There was too much rice in the nigiri and the fish portions were very small. Also, the toro is supposed to melt in your mouth, not cause you to gag because you can't chew through it! And, the rolls, don't get me started.
I'm a big fan of blowfish and other places where the rolls actually have flavor. The only exception was the spicy tuna roll which has ginger in - pretty tasty. I will admit the edamame and spareribs were pretty damn tasty, but honestly, they were the ONLY good things we had besides the sake and beer. This place has potential - cute atmosphere and good desserts, but please do something about the buyer and sushi chef. I have had sushi here close to 20 times and while the fish is the best, the service is severely lacking.
Last night I waited 20 minutes for the server to even come to the table and then another 45 to order desert. Sure it is busy but not enough ever to ignore customers. We complained and she did not even apologize. C'mon, be better, your customers are loyal, be loyal back. This is a great sushi place if you don't eat fish. They have many varieties of veggie nigiri and maki, including several unusual specialty rolls.
However, it is an outstanding sushi place for meat-eaters as well. I've never tried anything that hasn't been totally good. They also have a decent dessert menu. Woa, this place has a gorgeous staff and amazing food - the pear and blue cheese salad was inspiring, and the ecstasy, riptide and bernal rolls really ripped. Everyone in our group loved the mix of small plates and super fresh sushi - will definitely come back. I don't want to bore anyone with my experiences eating sushi in San Francisco or compare Moki's to better sushi restaurants ie the sushi at the food court in Stonestown Galleria is better.
I want to say this: the reason the fish is fresh is that there are only four choices. The crab is imitation. The ""creative"" rolls involve waxy, fatty flavors and little fish. Since when is sushi improved by a hawaiian flavor? I say, only when the sushi chefs have first mastered basic sushi making skills.
My friend and I agreed that the Moki roll is the best we've ever had - macadamias and jalapeno bits were a brilliant combo. The waitress was friendly both times, once we got to our table, but we were offered no service while waiting on the patio. City search had Moki listed as one of the top places for sushi. They were right about Moki. I am normally not a fan of miso, but the miso here was not too salty. Ithad great flavor thanks to the tofu and mushrooms in it. We had the california roll, spicy tunna roll, and the outrigger roll.
All were fabulous. The california roll had wonderful cavier, the spicy tuna actually tasted like sashimi should, and the outrigger roll, made of shrimp tempura, had a delicious crunch in the form rice rolll.
This place is great and I would definately go again. A lady eating there had the fried banana and ice cream dessert and said it was amazing. That is the next thing I will try. Iit can get crowded, but that means they go thru tons of fish and its always super fresh.
My partner is vegan and finds lots of options on the menu to eat. The back patio's quieter then the front and better for dates -- everyone I've taken to Moki's has absolutely loved it! This place serves extremely fresh and creative sushi dishes. The ecstasy roll is so fresh it melts in your mouth. On top of that, the prices are very reasonable. Overall, one of my top choices for sushi in the City.
The only negative to the whole experience was the slow service, but for sushi this good, it's something that I can overlook. We have tried sushi all over the city, and we consistently love Moki!
The fish is fresh and the creations are original. We love the Hawaiian feel to the place. If you haven't been, definitely give it a try. Seriously, there's a lot of hype over blowfish and ebisu. Find similar restaurants. Dining style Casual Dining. Cuisines Sushi. Hours of operation null.
