Spastic cerebral palsy, the most common type, is characterized by stiff, tight muscles that the patient has difficulty relaxing. Patients with spastic quadriplegia, who experience hypertonia in all four limbs, may not be able to walk, use their hands or arms, eat, swallow, or talk. Athetoid cerebral palsy, which constitutes about 10 to 20 percent of cases, is characterized by uncontrollable jerking and movements.
It more frequently affects the upper body than the lower body. The least common type of cerebral palsy is ataxic cerebral palsy, which affects 5 to 10 percent of patients and is characterized by lack of balance and coordination.
There is a pervasive belief that cerebral palsy patients always have cognitive disabilities as well. However, only about 30 to 50 percent of patients with cerebral palsy have cognitive impairments, while the remaining 50 to 70 percent do not. Unfortunately, even patients without intellectual disabilities may struggle to speak due to lack of muscle coordination. Cerebral palsy is caused by abnormal brain development or damage to the developing brain, but the specific cause is often not known.
Generally, cerebral palsy is either congenital or acquired. Congenital cases are caused by an event that occurred during or before birth. Acquired CP is much rarer, and is usually associated with a head injury or an infection such as meningitis.
There are several risk factors that can contribute to the development of cerebral palsy, although the presence of any of these factors do not guarantee that a child will develop CP.
